Antibacterial soap vs normal soap

As the entire world tries to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been reminded every day to frequently and thoroughly wash our hands. But then we are confronted with a choice that is more complex than the usual “what brand of soap should I get?” There is a choice between an antibacterial soap and normal soap.

The antibacterial soap sounds fancier. But does it mean it is more effective? Not so, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The government agency said there is not enough scientific proof that would indicate that antibacterial soap is better than the normal one. In fact, the agency is wary about the use of a specific chemic in antibacterial soap: triclosan. It is not so much as the presence of triclosan per se, but the possibility of being exposed to too much triclosan, which is an antibacterial and antifungal agent present in body washes and toothpastes, among others. In some cases, the chemical is also present in furniture, kitchenware, toys and other items you see at home.

The FDA then recommends to just simply washing with normal soap and water. This is the cheapest and easiest way to prevent the spread of virus. It also protects you from possibly getting infected because the soap can kill the germs in your hands especially when you wash for at least 20 seconds.
